Nonyl phenol NP

What is nonylphenol?

Nonylphenol C9H19C6H4OH, also known as nonylphenol, is a mixture of various isomers formed by the condensation of nonene and phenol in the presence of an acidic catalyst; Nonyl Phenol, abbreviated as NP, has a relative density of 0.94-0.95g/mL (20/20 ) and a boiling point (95%) of 283-302 .

Nonylphenol (NP) is an important fine chemical raw material and intermediate. It appears as a colorless or pale yellow liquid at room temperature, with a slight phenol odor. It is insoluble in water but soluble in petroleum ether, acetone, carbon tetrachloride, ethanol, and chloroform.

Characteristics and Applications of Nonylphenol (NP)

Nonylphenol (NP) has strong lipophilicity and is not easily decomposed in the environment. It is a compound of cycloaliphatic phenols and is often added as an antioxidant to polystyrene and polyvinyl chloride (204 PVC) to increase the stability and toughness of plastics.

In addition, nonylphenol (NP) is mainly used in the production of surfactants, antioxidants, textile printing and dyeing auxiliaries, lubricant additives, pesticide emulsifiers, resin modifiers, resin and rubber stabilizers, and other fields.

The hazards of nonylphenol (NP)

A recent (1999) study found that nonylphenol (NP) can reduce the metabolism of male hormones by the human prostate, posing a serious threat to male reproductive ability and health. Due to the fact that nonylphenol is an environmental hormone that has adverse effects on organisms, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has included it in the "List of Persistent Toxic Substances" and officially included P-nonylphenol in the international list of toxic substances. Moreover, due to its chemical structure similar to estrogen in animals and humans, once it enters the bodies of animals and humans, it will interfere with the normal physiological functions of endocrine system. The European Union has banned the use of this substance in household detergent formulations since 1980, and industrial detergents will also be completely banned after 2000.

EU control of harmful substances such as nonylphenol (NP)

On June 18, 2003, the European Union issued Directive 2003/53/EC, which stipulated corresponding restrictions and regulations on the use, circulation, and emissions of alkylphenol polyoxyethylene ethers such as nonylphenol (NP) and nonylphenol polyoxyethylene ether (NPEO) from January 17, 2005; APEO is the abbreviation for alkylphenol polyoxyethylene ether compounds, which is a commonly used non-ionic surfactant. It is widely used in industries such as prevention, leather, plastics, daily chemical, and papermaking.

APEO itself does not have teratogenicity or carcinogenicity, but its synthesized by-products may have carcinogenicity.

The restrictions on APEO in regulations usually refer to four items: NPEO (nonylphenol polyoxyethylene ether), NP (nonylphenol), OPEO (octylphenol polyoxyethylene ether), and OP (octylphenol). When their concentration is equal to or greater than 0.1%, they cannot be sold or used in the market. That is to say, the maximum allowable limit is 1000ppm. This directive was officially implemented in January 2005.
